German Apple Cake—Apfelkuchen
It was German Supper night at Sarah’s Gourmet Dinner Club, and she was assigned dessert, so she thought what we’re all thinking this month: Apfelkuchen! I mean, apple cake! She chose Golden Delicious apples from Fruitwood Farms this time, for the sweet/crisp top layer. A bit of artistic arranging and the rest is a pretty simple cake recipe. The results speak for themselves, although to make the picture complete, perhaps a scoop of ice cream and some caramel sauce. Ach du lieber! See the rest of the wonderful photos and the recipe plus instructions at Sarah’s blog post.

Flat Green Beans
What to do with beans can be a challenge, not because there aren’t many ways to eat them, but because there are. Susan makes a simple choice this week, combining flat green beans from Springdale Farm, with Onions from Hymer Farm, and Olive Oil from Villa Barone. For tomatoes, she had a variety of choices. Springdale, Hymer, DanLynn Organic, Savoie Organic, Flaim Farm, and Formisano are all on her shopping list. For simple preparation instructions, lovely photos, and a brief meditation on the difference between yellow beans and green, go to Susan’s blog.

Cranberry Apple Crisp
Sarah mixed her tart with her sweet this week to serve up a perfect fall dessert you should try to perfect before you’re asked to bring something to a holiday feast. We’re talking sweet apples and tart cranberries here, and oats for a crispy crumble with just a hint of healthy eating to justify that second portion. Table staff at both Fruitwood Farms and Wm. Schober Sons tables will help you choose the right apples for this recipe. For the rest, you’ll have to go to Stef’s blog for her recipe and glorious photos.

French Bulldog Rescue Network
French Bulldog Rescue Network. The wonderful people of the FBRN will be staffing the Dog Tent for us this week, sharing stories of rescuing needy animals at extreme expense. If experience is any guide, they’ll also be celebrating the Halloween holiday by inviting their animals to express their inner ballerinas and cowboys. Who knows, you may even get a change to pet (or kiss) a Frenchie this weekend. Stop by and meet the whole happy family, consider adding a member to your own.
Music SAT OCT 28
EAST STAGE MUSIC TENT. The Incomparable Dave Kelly brings his scary talent to this Halloween Weekend installment of the Farmers’ Market. Listen carefully for songs about demon possession and things that go terribly wrong in the night.
WEST STAGE UNDER PATCO. This is our favorite photo of the Mannix Duo, and since it’s Halloween, maybe the couple will be willing to dress at Sonny and Cher at 9 in the morning. At least we can hope.
This is the last music for the season. In November, the music spaces are turned over to artists for the Handmade Holidays celebration of local crafts.
The Market opens at 8am, rain or shine. Music at both stages starts at 9am.
Small Bills and a Bathroom Key
Many of you know, but for those of you who don’t, I carry small bills for vendors who run out of singles during the Market day. For guest vendors who might not be aware, I also have a key to Perkins Art Center, a Market sponsor, the primary benefit of which, for our vendors is INDOOR PLUMBING!
VENDOR PARKING PERMITS
It’s good business to save the best parking spaces for SHOPPERS! Most visitors will tell you it’s tough to find parking at the Market. We make things worse by parking our own vehicles in spaces that could be used and re-used many times by shoppers. Please encourage your table crew to park for free in the Lumberyard Parking Garage (just across Collings Avenue from the west entrance). There are plenty of spaces inside, and the walk back to the Market takes 3 minutes.
Flexible Site Plan
Changes will continue to occur throughout the season as vendors come and go and as we learn more about how neighbors interact. I remind you no spaces are ever guaranteed and require your cooperation if I have to move your location any given week.

Handmade Holidays Preview 2017
Hello, Vendors, Artists, Crafters, Food Artisans, and Friends of the Market!
Handmade Holidays
Preview SAT OCT 28, 2017
Welcome Artists and Crafters. We’re delighted to host you for the 2017 Handmade Holidays Preview event at the Collingswood Farmers’ Market.
Whether you’re a Market veteran or a Market rookie, these instructions will help insure a smooth arrival and setup during what can be a hectic hour. You’ll be moving into a Market that is already well established, joining dozens of vendors with their own customary locations, setup procedures, and traffic patterns. Do not assume that you can arrive when you like and drive into the Market to set up. Take it easy, stay aware, and remember you are a guest.
THE WEEK BEFORE. Study your location
- Further down this post you will find the site plan for SAT OCT 28.
- Study the for your location and any other information about how to approach the Market, set up, and exit.
- The first farm vendors arrive at 6am. You are welcome to arrive with them.
- Arrive no later than 7am. You need to be ready to sell at 8am.
- David will be on site wearing red sweatshirt and/or jacket and a Market cap.
- Find David or text him to let him know you’ve arrived.
- Text, don’t call, (856) 979-6653
If you’re on the “Speedline side” of the Market (spaces 50-89)
- STOP
- Stop at the west entrance to the Market.
- DO NOT proceed directly to your space and put up a tent.
- David will guide you to your space when the traffic permits.
- You will have at most 15 minutes to unload your gear and remove your vehicle from the Market.
If you’re on the North side of the Market (spaces 1-49)
- DO NOT drive into the Market at all.
- You’ll park briefly alongside the parking meters on the north side to unload.
PARKING YOUR VEHICLE FOR THE DAY.
- Don’t command a valuable parking space that a dozen of your customers can use if you leave it available.
- David will have Vendor Parking Passes for you.
- Park in the Lumberyard Garage for free.
- Saving spaces for shoppers means more of them will visit your tent and table.
BRING THE PLAN. Have the latest plan with you
- This blog is easy to bring on your smartphone.
- The site plan is subject to change.
- The latest version is always live at the blog.
- Don’t be late, but text ahead if you’re going to be late.
- (856) 979-6653.
- If you must call instead of texting, please remember, when I answer, I will be busy with someone who’s on time.
- Remain patient.
Drive the right direction
- Traffic is ONE WAY, west to east.
- The top of the site plan is the entrance.
- Spaces 50-89 wait for David to escort your car.
- Spaces 1-49 do not drive into the Market.
- Spaces 1-49 load from the “parking meter” side of the space
Look for the chalk
- Market space numbers are marked with chalk on the pavement.
- Market spaces are parking space dimensions, 10 feet wide by 16 feet deep.
- Under the Speedline, we follow the diagonal parking space lines.
- On the north side, we “square off” the diagonals.
- The Market provides space only.
- Bring your own tables and tents.
- November can be windy; tents require weights for safety.
- Plan your displays so that your products don’t fall or blow away.
Unload quickly
- The “drive” down the middle gets very congested.
- At most, you have 15 minutes to unload.
- Stay to the side to permit others to pass.
- Don’t even think about parking your vehicle in your space.
- Get a free Vendor Parking Pass from David.
- If you take a prime parking spot for four hours, customers can’t use it.
Be a good neighbor
- The Market is a wonderful community of vendors who cooperate.

Location
The Market is not a permanent structure with a street address. It’s a section of pavement between Haddon Avenue and the High-Speed PATCO train to Philadelphia known as the Speedline. It sets up Saturday mornings from the first of May until the Saturday before Thanksgiving, from 8am until noon, and by 2pm the only way to identify the location is by the sponsor banners flying from the utility poles.
Using Google Maps?
For mapping purposes, use 713 North Atlantic Avenue, Collingswood as an address. That’s actually the Collingswood Police Station, but it’s the closest named building.
The market is located in Collingswood’s flourishing downtown business district, situated only 10 minutes from Center City Philadelphia by car and by PATCO Hi-Speedline.
The Towers. Once you get close, the Market can be found easily by looking up—for 2 water towers. The Market occupies the parking lot near the base of the two blue water towers in the center of town.
Near Directions
- If you enter town on Haddon Avenue, turn right onto Collings Avenue at the traffic light in the middle of town, then left into the entrance to the Community Center just before you reach the Speedline.
- If you enter town on Collings Avenue, make a right turn into the entrance to the Community Center, just after coming under the Speedline.
- If you enter town on PATCO, exit the turnstiles and head left, which is west, in the direction of Philadelphia. Walk along the PATCO tracks for about a block and a half and you will see the Market.
From the Ben Franklin Bridge
You will take Admiral Wilson Blvd. (30/676) to 30/130 south (the PUB is a landmark at the ramp)
Go thru the light at the Cooper River Golf driving range, past cemetery, and keep an eye to your right for a Dunkin Donuts.
Make the right at the Dunkin Donuts corner onto Haddon Ave, BUT keep right to jughandle around UNDER 130 and up onto Haddon Ave into Collingswood. (There is a sign “Welcome to Collingswood”)
Drive through first light (Browning Rd. intersection). At second light (Collings Avenue), turn right. You’re practically there.
Turn right onto Collings Avenue and turn left into the Community Center (past the fire hall). Stay to the right and follow the traffic or park immediately.
Look up. You’ll see two blue water towers. The Market is in the same lot.
This should be about 7 minutes drive from Ben Franklin in Saturday morning traffic.
Parking
- PATCO Collingswood Station parking along Atlantic Ave. extends right up to the Irvin Avenue entrance of the Market and is ample and free.
- Free street parking along the Market section of Atlantic Avenue and neighboring streets.
- Free parking in lots just north of the Market both west and east of the Police station.
- Kiosk and meter parking along Haddon Avenue.
- Kiosk parking in the Lumberyard Garage on Collings Avenue across from the Community Center.

How D’ya Like Them Apples?
Our Official Market Bloggers do a wonderful job of alerting us to what’s fresh at the Market (and what to do with all that bounty)! Once again, as in every October, we’re all about the apples this week. First, Denine Gorniak shows us every pie entered in the 2017 Annual Apple Pie Baking Contest! plus commentary on the entries, the winners, the judging, photos of every mouth-watering moment.
Add to that recipes for Apple Crisp and an Apple Grilled Ham and Cheese sandwich, and you won’t find one bad apple in the barrel.

Denine Gorniak (The Bicycle-Chef). PIE CONTEST RESULTS 2017. Denine is now a veteran judge for what she calls “one of the tastiest events of the year,” the Market’s annual Apple Pie Baking Contest. This year, 9 judges sampled 21 pies, all 9 awarding points for presentation, but half of the judges tasting the Classic Apple entries, the other half tasting the Apples Plus pies, which can contain other fruits or enhancing ingredients (think nuts, or bourbon). Yes, at long last, it’s fall.
It’s going to be mostly cloudy, possibly even drizzly, temperatures in the 60s struggling to reach 70. Altogether seasonable for OCT 14. For the first time this season, shoppers will be thinking squash, and soup (and apple pie) and pumpkins.

STEF PERNA’S APPLE BUTTER
Stef Perna (treatbelly). Apple Butter. “If you enjoy making (and eating) apple butter, now is the time! The Collingswood Farmers’ Market vendor Wm. Schober & Sons is offering a variety of apples. I used Cortland and Empire apples, as well as a splash of their apple cider for this apple butter recipe.
Try a smear of apple butter on thick lightly-toasted sourdough bread, topped with your favorite sharp cheddar cheese, or a generous sprinkle of flaky sea salt. My go-to cheese is a creamy English cheddar with mustard seed and ale” sometimes known as Red Dragon. Rustic Apple and Pear Tart

DENINE GORNIAK’S RUSTIC APPLE PEAR TART
Denine Gorniak (The Bicycle-Chef). Apple Pear Rustic Tart. They’re also known as crostadas. Apples and pears are hitting their peak at the Market. Schober, Fruitwood, Springdale, and other vendors are putting out their best, just in time for this week’s Apple Pie contest. Whether you’re entering or baking for your family only, put your pie dough skills to good use with a rustic tart. They’re easy to make and so worth the effort. Be gentle with the dough and barely work it. (Or use a store-bought dough and pretend you didn’t.) Don’t worry about fine aesthetics; they’re supposed to look rustic! Collingswood SAT OCT 07
Glorious. Temps in the 70s.
We’re calling it for Mostly Sunny, no chance of rain, with temperatures warming to almost 80 by the closing cowbell. Load the tables and let’s sell some Jersey Fresh!
Official forecast for SAT OCT 07
Site Plan for SAT OCT 07
PLAN CHANGED FOR THE BOOK FAIR.
This is one of the two unusual weeks of the season when, because of a Borough-wide event, the annual Book Fair, Haddon Avenue is closed and Irvin Avenue is open to vehicle traffic. Our Yards Farm and the Big Shrimp Company have been moved inside the Market. Nature’s Own Farm will take up the space usually occupied by the Corn Truck at the west end. The Corn Truck is done for the season; so is Lester Viereck, and so is the Sweet Freedom Bakery.
BID Vendors SAT OCT 07
BID Vendors. At the west end of the Market, members of the Collingswood Business Improvement District (BID) may sell food products not necessarily locally-sourced.
Shoppers may not know that the special arrangement with Sara’s Produce is that they may sell “exotic” produce, but are prohibited from selling anything that grows in New Jersey. The rules at their table are: “Anything But Jersey Fresh.”
We’ve got most of your favorite BID vendors this week: Dulce Artisanal Pastry, Villa Barone, Charlie’s Crepes, and Sara’s Produce will be on hand. They’ll be joined by Inspired Brews Kombucha, not technically a member of BID but more than welcome!

- Duker T’s Catering
—“Is it chili?” No, it’s warm today. Are you cold? “No, I mean, is it time for Duker T’s famous chili?” Step up and get yours early, folks. It may be beef, or maybe sausage, but it will be spicy without scorching your tongue and throat. Spicy but not hot. Chili but not chilly.
-
DUKER T’S SPICY BUT NOT HOT CHILI

- Inspired Brews Kombucha
—Always fresh, with fun flavors on tap! Sip a sample, buy a bottle, or bring a growler for a refill. - PRESERVATION
—If it’s locally grown and delicious, and if it can be pickled, these guys will preserve it. Stock up on old favorites and check out the new varieties. - Constellation Collective
— Bagels, frittatas, scones, donuts, and always a delicious invention or two. - Weckerly’s Local Premium Ice Cream
—Did you know they make their own cones, and the cookies for their incredible ice cream sandwiches? - Our Souls Shine Applesauce
—It’s applesauce like your mom would make, if mom was a writer, a holistic wellness coach, a kids yoga instructor, and a vegan. Organic apples plus kale.

Susan Mauer Lynch (Yellow Room Upstairs)
The Best Hot Dog You Never Heard of
Susan Mauer Lynch (Yellow Room Upstairs). The Best Hot Dog You’ve Never Heard of. Susan’s been experimenting with a lot of comforting meat dishes this season, making good use of Hillacres Pride pork, for example, and bison from Buck Wild Bison. This week she’ll let you in on the secret of Jersey Hot Dogs (something she calls Tony Go’s). You’ll need a crusty Italian roll or baguette (think Wildflour, Amber Grain, or Dulce) onions, peppers, and potatoes. That’s right, potatoes! All of those will be easy to find at several of our Market vendor tables. For the prep and assembly instructions, you’ll have to go to Susan’s blog.

Corn and Vegetable “Risotto”
Denine Gorniak (The Bicycle-Chef). Corn Risotto. Denine hasn’t been at the Market as much as she would like this season. Her blog post tells the story. However, she recently “laid in some corn” for immediate or eventual consumption and then cut some from the cob to mix with onions, peppers, and zucchini (plus a spice blend she found at Occasionette) to make what you’d probably call a mock risotto since it contains no rice at all, let alone Arborio. Intrigued? It’s simple, comforting, spicy, slightly exotic and accompanies a wide variety of dishes. (Good cold from the fridge too!) See the instructions and photos to guide you through at Denine’s blog, TheBicycle-Chef.com.

For History or Architecture Lovers
Proud Neighbors of Collingswood Tour
ARCHITECTURAL HSITORY OF COLLINGSWOOD. Look for representatives of Proud Neighbors of Collingswood at their card table space beneath the Speedline. They’ve got your tickets for the SUN OCT 15 Walking Tours. You have just one week left to reserve your space. Tours are guided by local experts in architectural history. Take one tour or all three in the Lakeview Drive area, and along Park, Stokes, and Collings Avenues. Tours conclude with a gathering at Devils Creek Brewery to relax with friends and share your new knowledge.
Music SAT OCT 07
EAST STAGE MUSIC TENT. We’ve got music from She Hates Me this week, which means newly-elected member of the Camden County Democratic Committee Shannon McGill Vasile will be singing pretty with Kevin Sullivan, who is better at crashing parties than joining them.
WEST STAGE UNDER PATCO. Are they jazzy? Do they swing? Are they cutting-edge or nostalgic? Yes. Trio Nova Duo is that and more. You may not be able to name every tune, but you’ll recognize them from the bossa nova, jazz, and pop catalogs.
