MAYFAIR!

Week 4 of our 2018 Season is the very different Mayfair Saturday.

PartyCows

As we do just once every year, we’re relocating to Irvin Avenue this week to accommodate Mayfair, the annual town-wide block party that attracts maybe 50,000 participants to Haddon Avenue. For experienced vendors, this is no surprise; for newcomers, the dislocation will be startling.

 2018 Mayfair FM

Vehicles are Prohibited

Vehicles cannot be driven into or parked on Irvin Avenue, which is narrower than our usual spaces. Instead, you’ll be parking in the lot behind the Kitchen Associates building and unloading by foot onto Irvin Avenue.

Do Not Drive Onto Irvin Avenue

A few vendors have made appointments with David to arrive at particular times for very brief vehicle access. Unless you have a scheduled time to use your vehicle, park in the Kitchen Associates lot and walk your setup.

Site Plan and Pavement Chalk

  • The Irvin Avenue Site Plan is attached.
  • In addition, David will be chalking the pavement squares with your initials to confirm which spaces you’ve been assigned.

Weather Forecast

No chance of rain during Market hours. That’s good news for the chalking of the pavement and a dry setup. There’s a chance of thunderstorms for the afternoon, but not until after the regular Market hours.

Weather MAY 26

Guest Vendors

We had limited room for Guest Vendors this week, but are happy to note the several participants in the site plan above. Woof & Whiskers Pet Treats, Neil’s Knife Sharpening, and Barn & Stone House Soap will join our full-season vendors as Guests this week.

BID Vendors

Only Villa Barone and Sara’s Produce will join us, both near the intersection of Haddon Avenue, just inside Muth Family Organic Farm and King Kernel corn.

Guest Artist

We are including one Featured Artist among our guests. Return vendors will recognize the colorful Doctor-Seuss-like birdhouses of Deppenwood. They’re very popular Mayfair items and we’re happy to have them in our midst.

Deppenwood Birdhouse

No Veggie Valet / No Volunteers / No Music / No Dog Tent

There will be no Veggie Valet, no Friends of the Farmers’ Market, no Live Music, no Dog Tent, and no dedicated Nonprofits spaces this week. All will return SAT JUN 03.

Flexible Site Plan

This week especially I will need vendors to be flexible and understanding as you set up your spaces. I will be on the site from 5am until 8am to facilitate the load-in, after which I will depart to visit the Brigantine Farmers’ Market. (It’s the only Saturday I am free to see this Market, and I’ve never been there.) Remain calm and sell a lot of stuff.

Collingswood SAT MAY 19

We’ll See.

Thursday is too far out from Saturday morning to make a confident forecast with weather as iffy as this week has given us. Let’s hope the showers scatter elsewhere.

Siteplan for SAT MAY 19

Collingswood Food Business Area: The color coding identifies new Market areas. At “the top” of the plan—the west end, on the Collings Avenue side of the Market—we’ve created space for Collingswood food businesses. Amber Grain Bakery will join Sara’s Produce, Villa Barone Restaurant, and the new Revelation Cafe (a combination effort between Revolution Roasters and The Constellation Collective).

THE MEAT MARKET: At the “other end” of the plan—the east end at Perkins Art Center—we’ve collected farms that raise livestock, including heritage beef and pork, yak and alpacas, chickens for their meat and eggs, and bison.

REVELATION CAFÉ!

Local food heroes Revolution Roasters and the Constellation Collective have teamed up to form a new food-and-beverage café at the west end of the Market (former location of the Treehouse Café). Expect all their familiar favorites, plus seating and tables to make it easy to enjoy their breakfast/brunch treats.

Amber Grain Bakery has taken up a new space here in the Collingswood section. They made their mark last year, creating long lines of faithful customers waiting for exquisite loaf breads, most of them featuring rye flour. Last week we saw cookies and granola, furthering our impression that they’ll be trying something new every week.

Villa Barone features their familiar favorite sauces, oils, and olives, usually ciabatta loaves, tasty zeppolis, sometimes their own fresh mozzarella.

Sara’s Produce by special arrangement with the Market, is the one source for produce NOT grown in New Jersey. In fact, that’s their mandate: bring us the “exotics” so our shoppers won’t need to go to the supermarket for bananas and mangoes.

JERSEY FRESH STRAWBERRIES FOR FRENCH TOAST

Susan Mauer Lynch (yellowroomupstairs). Strawberry Cheesecake Stuffed French Toast! Those words alone should whet your appetite for Susan’s recipe this week. She got her strawberries from Fruitwood Farms and Muth Organic Farm. Breads came from Amber Grains and Wildflower Bakery. And the butter from Hillacres Pride. A meal suitable for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for as long as the Jersey Fresh strawberries last. TWO OUTSTANDING MARKET FAVORITES.

EAST STAGE MUSIC TENT. Playing at the same time but not part of the trio is Market favorite Dave Kelly, coaxing music out of a wide variety of stringed things. Dave’s wide and intriguing repertoire covers everything from Nirvana to the Mister Softee theme.

WEST STAGE UNDER PATCO. Trio Nova Duo. Familiar pop classics, plus tunes from many genres and epochs by guitar virtuosos. Smooth, catchy, always tuneful, they’re the duo that makes as much music as a trio.

FEATURED ARTIST. STEPH SCHULTZ (Mermaid Metal). Handmade sterling silver and gemstone jewelry inspired by the sea. I think we can say a little bit more about how exquisitely detailed these beauties are. Nature provides the colors in abalone shell, turquoise, amber, and birthstones, and they are both rich and complex. Steph’s artistry is to bind them harmoniously with silverwork that is both clean and clearly made by hand. Gotta see ‘em.

Buy 2 Give 1

LOURDES/OAKLYN PANTRY. It’s time again to BUY 1 GIVE 1. Please be generous and grab an extra lettuce or spinach this week to fill the needs of a food-vulnerable neighbor. Food donated on Saturday is distributed the following Monday while it’s still Jersey Fresh.

OTHER NONPROFITS THIS WEEK. Look for tables staffed by the Rutgers Master Gardeners (Gardening Helpline), by the Proud Neighbors of Collingswood (for their annual House Tour), and by the Camden Clock Chasers (to benefit scholarships for Collingswood High School seniors).

Small Bills and a Bathroom Key

Many of you know, but for those of you who don’t, I carry small bills for vendors who run out of singles during the Market day. For guest vendors who might not be aware, I also have a key to Perkins Art Center, a Market sponsor, the primary benefit of which, for our vendors is INDOOR PLUMBING!

VENDOR PARKING PERMITS

It’s good business to save the best parking spaces for SHOPPERS! Most visitors will tell you it’s tough to find parking at the Market. We make things worse by parking our own vehicles in spaces that could be used and re-used many times by shoppers. Please encourage your table crew to park for free in the Lumberyard Parking Garage (just across Collings Avenue from the west entrance). There are plenty of spaces inside, and the walk back to the Market takes 3 minutes.

Flexible Site Plan

Changes will continue to occur throughout the season as vendors come and go and as we learn more about how neighbors interact. I remind you no spaces are ever guaranteed and require your cooperation if I have to move your location any given week.

Susan Mauer Lynch (yellowroomupstairs). Asparagus three ways! Susan cooks to honor tradition, and this week she honors both her great-grandmother’s home-grown asparagus and the tradition of eating Jersey Fresh, in Jersey, when it’s fresh!
