Collingswood SAT JUL 29

The Opposite of last week.

Oh boy. Last week was dry and hot. This week looks cool and wet. Prepare for winds averaging 15 miles per hour, gusting higher. Could get messy. Bring tent weights.

Site Plan for SAT JUL 29

We’re full again with legacy vendors, plenty of guests, music on two stages, a guest artist, an animal rescue in the Dog Tent, and a yoga group. We relocated the new goat petting area to the usual Sikking Flower spaces below the Speedline. Be sure to see them; they’re adorable. Busy busy time of the season!

KNIFE SHARPENING. Consider bringing your knifes, tools, dull blades of all kinds to the Music Tent area this week. Neil comes to the Market only once a month, and SAT JUL 29 will be his last visit until the end of September.

BID Vendors SAT JUL 29

BID Vendors. At the west end of the Market, members of the Collingswood Business Improvement District (BID) may sell food products not necessarily locally-sourced. Villa Barone and Blue Moon Olive Oils feature olives and oils, for example.

This week, we’ll host Dulce Artisanal Pastry, Villa Barone, Blue Moon Olive Oils, and Sara’s Produce. Charlie’s Crepes has a BID space too, but he relies heavily on local produce.

Inspired Brews Kombucha will find its place in the BID section this week too.

Guest Vendors SAT JUL 29

  • Weckerly’s Ice Cream

  • Green Aisle Grocery

  • Amber Grain Bakery
—Now a regular vendor, still selling out early every week.
  • MECHA Local Artisan Chocolates
—We had to slip them into the space between Duker T’s Catering and Davidson’s Exotic Mushrooms, but we’re happy to have chocolate at the Market any time.
  • Constellation Collective
—Who knows what the CoCo girls are cooking up this week? Doughnuts surely, and maybe frittatas?
  • Garden State Juice NOT COMING
—Your favorite juicers, who always make such wonderful concoctions from our own vendors’ produce, will return SAT AUG 05 with special flavors old and new.
  • Knowhere Farm Goats Milk Soap

Three Cold Dishes for Hot Weather.

This week, to beat the heat, we have pickles and salads you can produce without needing to turn on an oven or stove.

Stef Perna (treatbelly)
Freezer Pickles

Summer Pickles

Stef has been busy “testing pickle recipes using cucumbers, zucchini, beets and garlic from the Collingswood Farmers’ Market vendors: Flaim Farms, Savoie Organic Farm, Springdale Farms and DanLynn Farms.” She’s come to the conclusion that freezer pickles are the best way to savor the produce of summer while still having leisure time to enjoy the warm weather. So “easy” is the key to the recipe she offers this week. Follow the link to her blog here to see how simple a delicious life can be.

Susan Mauer Lynch (Yellow Room Upstairs)
Asian Cucumber

Asian Cucumber

Susan is on a mission to discover hidden treasures at the Market each week. This week, she spent more time negotiating for the right cucumber than it took to concoct and execute her simple and perfect recipe for preparing it. You can find an ideal Asian Cucumber for yourself at Julie Pierre’s table, Our Yards Farm, and follow the link here to Susan’s simple instructions for maximizing your enjoyment. Hint: if you can make a vinaigrette, you’re in business!

Natalie Winch (Food Empowerment Blog)
Mother Vida’s Health Salad

Vida Salad

If you’ve bought and not yet used a cabbage, some cucumbers, perhaps some carrots, and at least one pepper (either sweet or hot) from your favorite vendor, consider making a version of Natalie’s mother Vida’s Health Salad. You won’t have to use an appliance or heat an oven, and this dish actually improves in flavor with a day or two in the refrigerator. Follow the link to Natalie’s blog here and find the simple instructions for using what you probably already have.

Special Return Vendor

Pastured Lamb

Mike Wilk Lamb Farm.

Last year, he was a new vendor who gave many of us our first chance to buy fresh lamb directly from the farm that raised it. This year, we’ve been waiting with varying degrees of patience for the lamb to return. This is the week. Mike says, “We raise grass-fed lamb naturally. We use no hormones, fertilizers or other chemical additives. We rotate our flock every three days on fresh pasture and in the winter feed them exclusively hay with a little grain. Our lamb is sold directly to consumers, off the farm.” Thanks, Mike, and welcome back.

Music SAT JUL 29

Monko Posterized

EAST STAGE MUSIC TENT. There’s no telling whether Kevin Monko will appear solo (unlikely), or whether he’ll invite one or more of the members of Candy Volcano to play along. Either way, it’ll be a treat.

Barry Hollander Posterized

WEST STAGE BELOW PATCO. Guitarist, hippie, and jive turkey Barry Hollander will return to our west stage for a long-awaited encore since his first appearance at the Market in June. Don’t miss this one. He gets only three chances a season to make his mark.

Music starts at 9 AM on both stages, every week, rain or shine.

For Animal Lovers

All Breeds

Dog Tent. Our good friends 4Paws New Jersey will be staffing the official Dog Tent in the middle of the Market this week, dispensing wonderful advice, offering adoptable animals for your forever companionship, and selling the official Market Leash permits. They’re a wonderful group devoted to rescuing all breeds of dog from kill shelters, and they usually bring one or more adoptables to the Market for you to meet. Be sure to stop by if you’re in need of a new forever friend.

Small Bills and a Bathroom Key

Many of you know, but for those of you who don’t, I carry small bills for vendors who run out of singles during the Market day. For guest vendors who might not be aware, I also have a key to Perkins Art Center, a Market sponsor, the primary benefit of which, for our vendors is INDOOR PLUMBING!

VENDOR PARKING PERMITS

It’s good business to save the best parking spaces for SHOPPERS! Most visitors will tell you it’s tough to find parking at the Market. We make things worse by parking our own vehicles in spaces that could be used and re-used many times by shoppers. Please encourage your table crew to park for free in the Lumberyard Parking Garage (just across Collings Avenue from the west entrance). There are plenty of spaces inside, and the walk back to the Market takes 3 minutes.

Flexible Site Plan

Changes will continue to occur throughout the season as vendors come and go and as we learn more about how neighbors interact. I remind you no spaces are ever guaranteed and require your cooperation if I have to move your location any given week.

Site Plan for SAT JUL 22

Once again we have a very full site plan with no empty spaces. There’s little room for Guest Vendors, but we’ve carved out spots for a Kids Activity from Extraordinary Ed, a new goat petting pen from Knowhere Farm, and a henna tattoo station featuring the very talented Varsha Patel. Pick up a free seed packet from True North Church, or stop by to see the whimsical but very functional Scribble Stix of Featured Artist Bruce Palese. Live music from Trio Nova Duo and, making their Market debut, The Lonesome Turnpike Ramblers. Busy busy Market!

Susan Mauer Lynch Does Dinner and we’re invited.

Susan Mauer Lynch (Yellow Room Upstairs). Susan produces entire meals from the Market and provides careful, simple, logical instructions for preparing fresh ingredients. This week’s blog post includes several short tutorials any home cook will find helpful.

How to Grill Steak. Susan chose the Tomahawk Steak from Buck Wild Bison, our new meat vendor. It’s “lower in fat and cholesterol than choice beef, chicken, pork, and salmon” and is the new dinner choice for Susan’s family. Cook it “low and slow,” followed by a quick sear.

How to Caramelize Onions. Get fresh spring onions at several Market vendors including Flaim and Formisano, and make extra to save for later. Stir frequently over low, slow heat in butter and olive oil. Kosher salt, balsamic vinegar.

How to Fry Fresh Mushrooms. Get your fresh mushrooms from Davidson’s Exotic Mushrooms (any of six varieties) and fry them “the Julia Child way.” It involves letting the “butter bubble up and then bubble down” before adding the mushrooms. (You’ve probably been doing it wrong, like me.) Click through to the blog for the details.

Eggplant and Zucchini. As if that weren’t enough, you’ll find simple help for roasting Sicilian eggplant (from AT Buzby) and zucchini (from Springdale Farm). It helps to choose the right eggplant for different preparations. This one needs no salting.

To reproduce Susan’s entire summer meal, click here for her blog.

West Stage below PATCO. Brand new to the Market, Lonesome Turnpike Ramblers bring musicianship and an appreciation for bluegrass traditions. Music starts at 9am on both stages, every week, rain or shine.

For Animal Lovers

Dog Tent. Our good friends The Animal Adoption Center will be staffing the official Dog Tent in the middle of the Market this week, dispensing wonderful advice, offering adoptable animals for your forever companionship, and selling the official Market Leash permits.

GOAT PETTING PEN. Their application was approved, so we’ll have a new soap vendor, Knowhere Farm of Chesterfield, New Jersey, bringing the goats’ milk soap they produce themselves using milk from their own goats. They plan to bring some goats along as well, and a safe enclosure to make it easy to do some goat-and-kid petting. Grab your own kids and bring them along. Could be fun.

Eckert’s will be back with corn and lots of it. If customers are getting low on their favorite salad dressings or jams they’ll have a full selection.

Fruitwood Farms will have beets, blueberries, sweet cherries, corn, cucumbers, nectarines, peaches, donut peaches, radishes, squash, string beans, tomatoes and honey. NJ goodness!

We are accepting pre-orders for savings on 6 packs of leg & thigh or boneless breast.  As usual we will be well stocked on cheeses, and our delicious meats.  If this weather is too hot for you, grab some of our farm fresh yogurt and some fruit and make a great smoothie!”

Origin Almond is bringing back the Cinnamon Horchata, a very popular seasonal almond milks.  This modern twist on a festive summer favorite combines fresh almond milk with made-from-scratch organic brown rice milk which is then infused with organic cinnamon and real vanilla bean specks. Grilled Bruschetta

Leanne Entwistle (The Creped Crusader). Leanne went with cherry tomatoes fresh from Formisano Farms at our own Market, and a baguette from Wildflour Bakery for her grilled bruschetta. This recipe takes the indoors outdoors by producing bruschetta on the grill. Fresh mozzarella and basil is about all you’ll need to make this perfect appetizer or accompaniment for grilled chicken and a salad. Ah, summertime! See the simple preparation instructions by clicking through to Leanne’s blog here.

Blueberry Crumble Bars

Stef Perna (treatbelly) treats us to a special dessert item this week using a very short-lived commodity: the New Jersey Blueberry. It’s already too late to buy the organic berries she got from our cherished vendor Brookeberry Farms (They’re done for the season), but you can find plenty of berries from Hammonton at the Market this week from our other produce farms. Sugar, flour, butter and excellent blueberries combine here to make a crumble-topped masterpiece. See the details here.

Aunt Gig’s Refrigerator Pickles

Susan Mauer Lynch (Yellow Room Upstairs). Nobody knows the produce offerings at the Market better than Susan. She’s shopped cucumbers from Viereck Farms, Springdale Farms, DanLynn, and Savoie Organic. Garlic from Savoie, Flaim, Formisano, and DanLynn. Dill from both Flaim and Formisano. For these pickles, she went with crisp white Kirby Pickles from Savoie for the mild, delicate flavor and their crunch. Pick your own favorites and get the simple preparation instructions here.

Roasted Purple Carrots! Sarah Licata (Salt Jar). Sarah got her purple carrots from Formisano Farms. She used the tops to make a fresh gremolata (a blended mix of fresh herbs, garlic, and lemon juice, like a pesto without nuts and cheese) The roasting took just 30 minutes, and dinner was ready in about 45, with very little work. You can do the same, and serve with a bit of chicken and/or potatoes. You can even roast everything together for a one-step mean.
